Becoming an ALS Instructor
During ALS courses all candidates are continuously evaluated for their skills, knowledge and qualities that contribute towards a good instructor. Outstanding candidates on the ALS courses are identified as having instructor potential by the faculty on that course and invited to become instructors themselves and given access to an opt-In form at the end of the course.
ALS Instructor Pathway
Decisions made during the course regarding the Instructor Potential (IP) consideration are made by the whole faculty, under the guidance of the Course Director. To achieve successful nomination for IP status during the course the candidate must:
- Be nominated and seconded by faculty members on the course
- Achieve a satisfactory rating in the assessment of:
- Continuous assessment of technical and non-technical skills (ALS1 and ALS2) and
- Formative assessments (ALS2)
Instructor Potential Appraisal
- To receive a nomination for Instructor Potential (IP), the candidate must achieve a minimum score of 17 for ALS1 IP and a minimum score of 25 including achieving > 83% in their MCQ for ALS2 IP
- Any assessment score of ‘Not Achieved’ excludes the candidate from being selected
- Please note the clinical and non-technical skills are continuously assessed throughout the whole course and not just within the specific skill station or when team leading. Scores may adjust over the course with exposure and practice from the initial skill station and further observation from all faculty members
- The main advantages of continuous assessment are that there are opportunities for feedback, which can then be used to improve learning. The final score is based on evidence gathered over the span of the course.

Instructor Potential Nomination
Those identified as IP then attend an Instructor Course, unless they have already completed a recognised instructor course previously.
See Instructor Course Expression of Interest Page
Attend the Australian Resuscitation Council Instructor Course. On the Instructor Course Instructor Potential (IP) nominees for ALS1 and ALS2 attend the same course.
If attending the Instructor Course as an ALS1 IP and later identified as an ALS2 IP there is no need to reattend the instructor course as the prior course is recognised.
The Instructor Courses use contemporary theories of adult education in ALS and assists instructor development adding to the skills and knowledge already demonstrated by the potential instructor. Courses are facilitated in all states and territories.
After successfully completing the Instructor Course, candidates must then attend up to three courses as an Instructor Candidate (IC). During these IC courses experienced instructors mentor and evaluate the IC and once faculty is satisfied they have met the required standard the IC will progress to full instructor.
Current ALS (or Equivalent) Instructors
Current Instructors with RCUK, NZRC and ERC
If you are a current Instructor with RCUK, NZRC, or ERC, you may request to register with the Australian Resuscitation Council. Please complete this form so we can contact the organisation you instruct on behalf of and confirm these credentials. Once credentials are confirmed, there is a requirement to undertake provider courses as a developing instructor (Instructor Candidate or Recertification Instructor) before registration as a full instructor is achieved with the Australian Resuscitation Council.
Applications are welcome from those RCUK/ERC/NZRC Instructors currently (or shortly to be) residing in the commonwealth of Australia. The Australian Resuscitation Council reserves the right to refuse applications from overseas applicants who do not currently/intend to reside in Australia.
Current Instructors with another Organisation
If you have been nominated as an Instructor Potential on an Australian Resuscitation Council ALS Course, and you are a current instructor for APLS, EMST, EMAC, ACME or have completed the GIC, you may be able to avoid the need to attend another Instructor Course.
Please complete this form so we can contact the organisation you instruct on behalf of and confirm these credentials.
Should your current instructor status be recognised, you will advance to Instructor candidate status. As an Instructor Candidate (IC) you will need be to successfully complete at least two courses as an IC at different centres before you can advance to Full Instructor status. As an IC you will be supported and assessed as a developing faculty member.
Instructor Candidate and Recertification places on courses are limited. IC and Recertifying Instructors will need to contact course centres directly to book places as developing faculty to complete Australian Resuscitation Council registration once they have had their Instructor status confirmed. Dates and contacts are available on the Course Dates page.
Unfortunately the Australian Resuscitation Council does not cross-recognise Instructors from AHA, ACLS, or ACCCN courses.
