Australian Resuscitation Council Instructor Course

The course revolves around the role play of the educational experience. You will take the role of the lead instructor for your allocated skill, discussion, and scenario-based education sessions. The instructor course faculty member will play in the role of the ALS candidate (along with others from your course participant group), and the second faculty member will provide feedback on your educational delivery.

On this course you will take turns in the role of the lead ALS instructor leading the educational delivery of a:

  • Skill Station - one single component of the airway station
  • CAS Teach (Cardiac Arrest Scenario Teaching)
  • Discussion Workshop (Closed Discussion) - Subject on reversible cause during cardiac arrest
  • Assessment Scenario using:
    • ABCDE Assessment
    • CAS Test (Cardiac Arrest Scenario Test)

Course content is delivered in an ‘Environment-Set-Dialogue-Closure’ structure, with the content provided through your allocated topics. Participant allocations are detailed within the Program.

Each session is preceded by a faculty demonstration and/or Educator discussion giving you some guidance on what is expected.

To prepare for the course, please familiarise yourself with the relevant ALS Manual content related to your allocation of topics and scenarios.

Overall, the course is enjoyable with a relaxed atmosphere and adult educational approach. It is however a potentially challenging course as the debriefing draws out more personal and individual attributes relating to your performance as an educator. Feedback is offered in a constructive format by the faculty within each group, and you will be learning from peers as well as faculty. If additional confidential comments are required, the faculty members will give feedback in private.

On the course it is the faculty that move from room to room. You will be based in one room for the delivery of your sessions thus allowing you more control of the environment and 'set' for each. You will become familiar with the equipment in that room (but please bear in mind that many course centres operate with varying equipment). If you get the opportunity to practice with local ALS manikins, Laerdal SIM PAD, Rhythm Generators, or iSimulate before the course, this will be helpful.

TIPS:

  • Use the ‘environment-set-dialogue-closure’ format
  • Use the ALS manual for clinical content
  • Make a point of excellent timekeeping
  • Practice with technology between sessions

Instructor course assessment is based on a continuous assessment approach looking at the components of educational delivery. The Program and Marking Guide will provide further information and will be provided in advance of your course.

You will be allocated scenarios and topics for teaching in advance along with pre-reading materials to assist in your preparation for the course. All equipment will be provided including printed/hard copies of the scenarios.
